Vampire Weekend's set to play Red Rocks Friday

 Vampire Weekend creates some wickedly good music — and now the band gets to show off its indie pop tunes at Colorado’s famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

The band’s headlining a very cool Friday night line-up that also features Beaches and Dum Dum Girls. 

And yes, you can still get tickets to the show.

Owl City opens for John Mayer at Red Rocks tonight

Adam Young’s come a long way from making music in his parents basement.

These days, the synth-pop artist is known as Owl City and he brought his world of electro-pop music into the mainstream with his hit “Fireflies.”

Tonight, Owl City’s opening for John Mayer’s sold out show at Red Rocks. That’s a pretty good gig for this young artist.

Ok, you couldn’t afford the steep ticket price to see John Mayer play Red Rocks on Wednesday — or you spaced out buying tickets in time for the sold-out show.

No worries.

You can check out Mayer’s Red Rocks’ show on-line via UStream Go to johnmayer.com/ustream or ustream.tv/johnmayer at 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday. MST. I checked out the sites today and saw Mayer talking to his Internet fans direct from Jones Beach, New York.

Sure, the screen’s small but at least you can say you saw the Red Rocks concert!

DeVotchKa brings its annual Halloween shows to the Boulder Theater

The Boulder Theater is planning a full week of Halloween music parties in Boulder.

Gogol Bordello is hitting the venue Oct. 27-28  – and Colorado’s own DeVotchKa’s bringing its very special two-night music party to the Theater Oct. 29-30.

DeVotchKa’s Halloween parties are always quirky, unique and fun, so you don’t want to miss these shows.

Tix are on sale now and they’re running $39.50 per night. The band’s been playing less Colorado shows lately, so you better scoop up these tickets fast!

Phish plays three nights at the BankOne Center -- Oct. 10-12

They’re back!

Phish can’t get enough of Colorado, so the granddaddy of all jam bands is now scheduled to play three nights at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield. The show dates are Oct. 10-12 and tickets go on sale Sept. 11 at noon MST. Tickets are $60 for each concert.

The band’s launching its fall tour in Colorado and ticket buyers wil receive free MP3′s of each gig  at http://LivePhish.com.

A limited on-line ticket request period is now happening at http://phish.portals.musictoday.com/ and that runs through Sept. 3. Tix go on sale to the general public on Sept. 10 and 11 for the fall tour.

The buzz is on about the Colorado shows, so you know they’re going to sell out.

Chiddy Bang rocks the house at CU's WelcomeFest

The CU Program Council scored another big WelcomeFest hit!

Saturday night, the campus  group presented electro hip-hop duo Chiddy Bang on CU’s Farrand Field. The enthusiastic student crowd danced and sang along to the buzz band’s catchy tunes — with nary a glitch in the night.

The evening started out with tight sets by Colorado’s Air Dubai and rapper XV — who later joined Chiddy Bang on stage.  XV’s  beat-friendly rap and pop fusion got the crowd going and proved this is an artist you’re going to be hearing more from.

The crowd at Farrand Field was still light at that point, and students really started showing up at the end of the Pnuma Trio’s extended electro set.

 That’s where there were some problems.

CU students had to bring their BuffOne card to the show, so the lines got extremely long. Each card was hand-swiped  and caused major back-ups on both sides of the field.  It did make for a peaceful  crowd, but there has to  be a better way to do this.

Fortunately, Program Council held off Chiddy Bang’s set until the bulk of the students got onto Farrand Field.  PC Director Justin Greenstein estimated there  were 7,500 students  at the show – about the same as last year’s Pretty Lights gig.

Now for the good stuff.

Chiddy Bang hit the stage with a bang!

Rapper Chiddy headed right up to the front of his stage and started reeling off his clever rhymes, while drummer/producer Noah Beresin kept perfect time to the beat with his amazing samples. The duo cranked out a unique mix of rap, electro and pop beats, and picked some very interesting indie acts to sample.

The best part of the show came when Chiddy announced he was going to do some special Colorado freestyling.

Chiddy and Noah asked the crowd for unusual suggestions , so the audience rattled out weed, the color orange, the name Elizabeth, the Flatirons — and Johnny Depp going to Disneyland.

Chiddy rose to the challenge  and proved that he may be one of the best MC’s around. The hip-hop pro rattled off a word-perfect rap that rhymed perfectly and used all the students suggestions.

Yeah, I was pretty amazed.

Chiddy Bang spent the rest of the set showing off their skills and experimenting with sounds. At one point, Beresin announced they were heading into a mix with a Latin flavor and the duo pulled it off perfectly. The crowd also got into the group’s catchy, electro-based tune “Ice Cream Man.”

Rapper XV also joined the set and performed a couple of tunes with the group. Chiddy and XV balanced each other off and the crowd loved the combination.

The Chiddy Bang show ran until 10:30, because of the group’s later start. Too bad, I think the crowd would’ve been happy to stick around for more.

Was this the craziest WelcomeFest concert at CU?

No, but it may have been the most fun.

The Fruit Bats land at the Fox Theatre on Sat.

Saturday’s going to be a busy music night in Boulder, but you don’t want to miss the Fruit Bats concert at the Fox.

The Portland band is the brainchild of Shins’ guitarist Eric Johnson, and this band cranks out a a very eclectic mix of folk-meets-rock tunes. The group’s touring behind its last CD, “The Ruminant Band,” but you can count on the Fruit Bats putting on a show that features a wide variety of their material.

Rodrigo y Gabriela headline Red Rocks Friday

Rodrigo y Gabriela create some amazing metal and folk sounds on their acoustic guitars, so the perfect place to see this act is Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Friday. the Mexican guitar duo plays Red Rocks with opening act Xavier Rudd. This is going to be the ultimate night of guitar wizardry!

Chiddy Bang headlines CU Boulder's WelcomeFest on Saturday

The CU Program Council has a knack for picking up and coming bands to play its annual WelcomeFest. Past years have featured shows by Girl Talk, Asher Roth, 3OH!3, Maroon Five and Minus the Bear.

Saturday’s  WelcomeFest on CU Boulder’s Farrand Field features headlining MTV buzz act Chiddy Bang. The Philly duo cranks out a very cool mix of hip-hop, pop and electro sounds to create the ultimate dance party.

The concert bill also features sets by Pnuma Trio, XV and Air Dubai. This show is only open to CU students with a valid Buff OneCard — and it’s free!!
