The Decemberists: Sing-Along Concert at the Boulder Theater? Two-Minute Review

The Decemberists held lots of sing-alongs at their Boulder Theater show

Here’s a new thing we’re starting on the Club Notes blog — the two-minute review.

It’s a new way to get a snapshot review of Boulder’s most interesting concerts — and last night’s Decemberists show definitely falls into that category. What was the band thinking?

The Decemberists tried out their new acoustic music in Boulder last night.  The band performed its new tunes, but the sound was pretty generic. I even heard a few fiddle riffs I’ve heard other groups perform. The Decemberists really shined when they went back to their edgier, rock mode. Those were the highlights of the night.

However, the lengthy audience participation moments really killed the show. The band had the audience sing vocal exercises — I’m not kidding — and were told to make sounds like a whale was going to kill them!? — over and over. Oh yeah, all that schtick used up a good chunk of The Decemberists’ stage time.

Hopefully, this us just a phase for The Decemberists. I miss the band’s dramatic, epic shows.
