There are a lot of shoe-gazer bands gitting the road, so it’s refreshing when a group comes up with ways to create an entertaining show. In these tough economic times, music fans want to get their money’s worth from concerts.
OK Go pulled out all the stops at last night’s Fox Theatre show. The group came blasting music full-tilt with each band member sporting a different neon-colored suit. When was the last time you saw a band dress up for a show?
The rockers didn’t have enough room on stage — or any spare pets — to pull off their live video routines, but OK Go did show off its powerhouse indie rock tunes and enough schtick to keep the packed audience loving the show.
OK Go performed the tune “What To Do” on handbells, surprised lead singer Damian Koulash with an audience rendition of “Happy Birthday” — and showed off its musicianship with rocking versions of “Here It Goes Again” and “White Knuckles.”
Along the way, the band’s confetti machine poured out more confetti than a ticker-tape parade — I pity the soul that has to clean up that mess. Koulash also performed an acoustic song in the middle of the audience, and talked to the crowd about Boulderites making bongs out of lawn flamingos called Flabongos. Real or made up, the story entertained the crowd.
Some haters said the OK Go show was too gimmicky. I’d much rather see a band give a show its all, then see some band mumble to the crowd and act as if the audience isn’t even there.
That said, kudos to OK Go for keeping this reporter and the crowd entertained.
