You can always expect the unexpected at the MTV Video Awards.
This year held true to tradition — although it wasn’t due to the antics of comic/host Russell Brand.
Last year, Brand stole the show with his outrageous political comments and slams against the Jonas Brothers.
Sunday’s show opened with a striking Michael Jackson tribute — and a much more subdued Brand.
The real showstoppers of the evening were the musicians and it was a no-holds barred night of costumes, theatrics and temper tantrums.
Here’s the most watchable points of the evening:
Lady Gaga proved that it can be Halloween all-year long at the MVA’s last night. The quirky performer changed costumes that ranged from a mysterious masked lady in black, to her own verison of a mummy covered head to toe in red lace.
However, it was Lady Gaga’s song about the paparazzi that really was the show stopper. Gaga was pretty much performing in her undies and ended her tune covered in fake blood, suspended in mid-air.
It was definitely an MTV awards moment.
Not to be upstaged, Kanye West had a live temper tantrum on stage. The rapper was angry that country star Taylor Swift won the award for best female video star — instead of Beyonce, so he got up in the middle of Swift’s acceptance speech and spoiled the moment.
However, Beyonce was totally cool. She invited Swift back up on stage during one of her award moments and let the country star finish her speech. Now that’s class. West could take a lesson or two from Beyonce.
Then, Pink should’ve won an award for singing (or was it lyp-synching) to her nominated song — while doing mid-air acrobatics on a trapeze. Her act was part Cirque de Soleil and part rock show — and it was quite impressive.
Colorado boys 3OH!3 didn’t pick up the award for new artist, but they did show off their very colorful award outfits for the TV cameras.
It was quite the music night.
